sennheiser infra red system
access@queens-theatre.co.uk

The Queen’s Theatre operates a Sennheiser two-channel infrared induction loop system.

- The headsets are for anybody who would like the sound on the stage amplified and are available from the Box Office before the show.

- The headsets are also used for our Audio Described service when the show will also be relayed by an Audio Describer.

- The necklaces are used again to amplify the sound on stage and are for use by people who use hearing aids. The hearing aid must be set to the T position.

- If at any time you are unsure about using the headsets or necklaces, please speak to an usher or member of the Box Office for instruction.

headsets and necklaces

The audio from this system comes from two infrared transmitter boxes located at the top of the proscenium arch on each side of the stage. The system is powered five minutes (or earlier) before the house is opened for each performance as part of the control room technician’s pre show checks.

The system comprises two types of receivers; an “in ear” headset for people without hearing aids and an “induction” necklace for people with hearing aids.

how the sound is received by the headsets and necklaces

As mentioned before, the system is infrared. This means that the sound a patron should hear is transmitted wirelessly by an infrared signal (like your television remote control at home). The sensor on the headset/necklace then receives this signal. This sensor should point unobstructed towards the stage at the transmitter boxes. This might mean the patron has to tilt the headset or necklace upwards so that the sensor is pointing towards the top of the proscenium arch.

the “in ear” headsets

The “in ear” headsets feature a three-position channel selection switch. This selects between channel 1, channel 2, and both channels (channel 1 in the left ear channel 2 in the right ear).

Channel 1 - broadcasts the show

Channel 2 - broadcasts the audio describer (AD performances only)

For a normal performance the switch should be set to channel 1. Should a patron wish to listen to the Audio Describer during an audio described performance this switch should be set to channel 2.

If the patron wishes to listen to the audio describer and the show then the switch should be set to the 00 position. This setting should only be needed for audio described performances.

the "induction" necklaces

Unlike their “in ear” counterparts, the "induction" necklaces have no switch and will therefore only receive the Channel 1 broadcast (show). These necklaces are designed for those people wearing hearing aids, and the patron will need to switch their hearing aid to the “T” position.

Should a patron wearing a hearing aid wish to listen to the audio describer through a necklace, a technician needs to be contacted through the ushers. The technician will then swap the broadcast channels. (i.e. channel 1 would become the audio describer and channel 2 the show). This can only be done if there are no patrons already using headsets set to channel 1.
