A Norfolk village in 1955. We follow the daily life of the Armstrong family. With an alcoholic war veteran grandfather, an absent father and a mother at the end at her tether, ten year old Helen struggles with her fear of the world.

Meanwhile, the news of Ruth Ellis's execution is front page news, an event that disturbs Helen's vivid imagination. Can naughty girls really get hung from a rope? Do angels exist? And why has her friend got a doll identical to the one her Grandmother made for her?

Beautiful and gritty - a delicate and sensitive look at a child's fantastical, yet humanly real imagination.
