Douglas Rintoul presents first season at the Queen’s

This autumn, Artistic Director Douglas Rintoul presents his first season at the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch – which launches with the first ever revival of the hit musical Made in Dagenham.

Heralding a new era of creative collaborations with some of the UK’s best theatre companies, autumn begins with Made in Dagenham – The Musical, a partnership with New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich; followed by Bob Larbey’s comedy A Month of Sundays; and Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime, a Tommy & Tuppence thriller, presented by the Queen’s and Eleanor Lloyd Productions in association with The Watermill Theatre.

With the Queen’s super-affordable Jump the Q Season Ticket scheme, audiences can enjoy all three in-house productions from just £12.50 per show – a saving of up to 45% on top-price tickets. The Queen’s has also been undergoing a period of exciting image refreshment – with a bold, colourful look for its brand new website and season brochure – both of which have now been officially launched this week.  Brochures can be dowloaded and print copies are also available.

Douglas Rintoul directs the regional premiere of Made in Dagenham – The Musical, with a book by Richard Bean, music by David Arnold and lyrics by Richard Thomas, playing from 26 August – 17 September. Based on the Woolley/Karlsen/Number 9 Motion Picture, this production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited.

Dagenham, 1968: Rita’s a busy mum, loving wife and hard-working Ford factory employee. But something’s very wrong. Rita and her female colleagues are working long hours sewing car seats for far less money than the men. They’ve had enough. Finding a voice she never knew she had, Rita leads a trailblazing battle for equal pay, taking on the unions, Ford’s top brass and the Government. An inspirational look at how ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

From 23 September – 15 October, the Queen’s is excited to present the first major revival of the award-winning A Month of Sundays. This funny and tender masterpiece about growing old is by the celebrated Bob Larbey, writer of iconic TV hits The Good Life and As Time Goes By. In his pleasant nursing home, Cooper rails against his ageing body but remains proud of not having ‘lost his marbles’. But Aylott, his friend, is increasingly concerned about losing his. Humour keeps their worries at bay: Cooper flirts with pretty nurses while both men fantasise about escaping to the Swiss Alps. But if the laughter runs out, where do they go from here? Russell Bolam directs.

The wonderfully gripping thriller, Partners in Crime, will be performed from 28 October – 19 November. 1920s London. Tommy and Tuppence are home from the War. Broke and jobless, our intrepid heroes embark on a daring business scheme, ‘The Young Adventurers Limited’. Willing to go anywhere and do anything, their first task plunges them into a perilous world of political intrigue, criminal conspiracy, murder and mayhem. Partners in Crime is an inventive adaptation by Sarah Punshon and Johann Hari of Agatha Christie’s The Secret Adversary, originally produced by The Watermill Theatre in February 2015. This unmissable season finale is shot through with fast-paced action, comedy, live music and a dash of romance.

Our House
Community Musical 2016

More than 50 people from the local community will perform in the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch’s Community Musical 2016, the Olivier Award-winning Our House, from 27 – 31 July.

A London love story celebrating the iconic pop and ska songs of the hugely popular band Madness, Our House is a raucous tale of heartbreak, hope and hilarity, set in Camden Town in the ‘80s.

It’s Joe Casey’s sixteenth birthday and he’s treating his girlfriend Sarah to an evening in a brand new luxury apartment – the only problem is they have to break in. When the police turn up, Joe has to decide – run away, or face the music – a choice that will set the course of his life, and his love, forever.

The Queen’s Community Musical, held every two years, aims to get residents involved in the life of their local theatre. Our House’s enormous cast includes residents from all over Havering as well as across East London and Essex. After a day of open auditions during the spring, rehearsals are now in full swing for this wonderful musical directed by Ros Philips and written by Tim Firth, writer of several smash hits including Kinky Boots and Calendar Girls.

Audiences can sing and dance along to some of the best-loved hits of all time, all performed live by the Queen’s Community Company in this wonderfully uplifting show – It Must Be Love, Baggy TrousersMy GirlEmbarrassment, Driving in My CarThe Wings of a Dove, Night Boat to Cairo and of course the all-time foot-stomping dance-floor anthem Our House!

Queen’s in crowdfunding appeal for Community Musical

Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch has launched a crowdfunding appeal to help raise £2,000 for its much-loved Community Musical Our House.

The appeal has raised £150 so far – anyone interested in donating to this wonderful cause and helping to make this important event a reality can visit http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/our-house-community-musical. Crowdfunding, an innovative and increasingly popular method of fundraising, aims to appeal to a wide and diverse range of people, primarily using the internet and social media.

The Queen’s Community Musical, held every two years, works hard to involve residents in the life of their local theatre. Playing from 27 – 31 July, Our House has an enormous cast of 50 as well as a backstage crew, which includes residents from all over Havering as well as across East London and Essex – aged between 7 and 80 –  selected after an open audition process. The project aims to offer people the chance to work with a variety of theatre professionals – right on their doorstep.

Interim Chief Executive Thom Stanbury explains: “The Queen’s is incredibly proud of its Community Musical, which gathers together residents of all ages from all walks of life to produce a fantastic show with superb production qualities that fills the stage. Our Community Company is made up of passionate local people with real enthusiasm for making great productions. We aim for an inclusive company from all areas of the community, showcasing the very best of local talent.

“But as a registered charity which has experienced recent cuts to funding, the Queen’s finds it harder to maintain these wonderfully popular traditions – which are crucial to promoting community cohesion and well-being. We now ask for our audiences and community to support us and help this show be the best yet. We are so very grateful for anything we receive.”

Donations would go towards:

The Queen’s is eager to thank donors in a number of ways: ranging from name-checks on the website or the show programme to gifts of production photos or backstage tours and show tickets.

“I’m thrilled to be launching my first season as artistic director”

You’ll notice there are a few changes. These are the result of hundreds of conversations with our audience, staff, artists, partners, schools and arts organisations across East London, Essex and beyond. We’ve taken what the Queen’s Theatre does best and opened it up to new influences including collaborations with the best arts organisations in the UK, work by exciting local independent theatre-makers and we’re making it all available to more people than ever before.

0-0-cinderella-featuredimageThis season kicks off a new era of creative partnerships, starting with the regional premiere of hit musical Made in Dagenham, a co-production with the brilliant New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich. This is followed by Bob Larbey’s moving comedy A Month of Sundays, directed by Russell Bolam, one of the UK’s most exciting young directors, a thrilling new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime and, to round it all off, our spectacular traditional panto Cinderella.

Outer Limits is another new venture – a rolling festival of cutting edge modern theatre made by performers and companies from Essex and the outskirts of London. Original, exciting and intimate, it includes performances by Southend’s Old Trunk theatre company, Romford’s Dan Murphy, Wandsworth’s Spare Tyre and Essex performance poet Justin Coe.

There will be more opportunities for local performers to be supported and perform at the Queen’s Theatre. So if you are a performer, theatre-maker or artist in Essex or Outer London, come join us for the launch of our new artist support programme, Outer Limits on Saturday 3 September at 6pm at the Queen’s. There’ll be a chance to find out more, have a drink and meet the Queen’s Theatre team and each other. Email artistcallout@queens-theatre.co.uk to book a free place.

This season we’re making it easier for more people to enjoy our programme. If you live in Havering and have never been to the Queen’s before, look out for our Good Neighbour scheme offering tickets for £1. We’re also introducing our first dementia-friendly performances and holding our second Relaxed Performance this year – see here for more details.

You’ll have noticed that we have had a rebrand and we have a new website. We wanted to change the way we spoke to our audiences and how we appeared to potential audiences. So last year we started to talk to design agencies. We received 20 pitches including some close to home and others from further afield. We awarded AVE Design the project; they understood our organisation and ambition the most. With them, we embarked on an exciting journey, which included conversations with our audience and workshops with staff, audience and partners. I learnt so much about the theatre through this process. We hope you like the way we look. We ’re delighted with the result. It captures the spirit of the organisation. It’s creative, warm, colourful, approachable and chatty.

In early 2016 we successfully pitched to be the sole agency to deliver a full rebrand and website redesign for Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch. The theatre had recently appointed a new artistic director, Douglas Rintoul, resulting in the brand positioning needed to be developed to reflect new creative endeavours. Working with a project steering group we devised full brand and digital strategies for the organisation.

Following the strategic work we commenced with the creative, developing a new brand identity which was rolled out across the core collateral and templates. For this identity we wanted to create a logo that could be animated so that it could be projected in the foyer, on the stage in the auditorium and top/tailing any YouTube content. We also wanted the brand to capture the energy and hands-on approach that the theatre held as a core value, and so we worked with speech bubbles and rhetorical statements to add personality and dialogue to the brand. We wanted the brand to be as unique as the content the organisation was delivering, so we created a bespoke font for the Theatre to own and use here-on in.

We worked closely with the project delivery team at Queen’s, making the process very much a collaboration between us. This has resulted in a brand that really captures the heart and soul of the Queen’s Theatre.’ AVE Design

This season, we’re producing a second brochure. It’s a new brochure for schools and colleges. It shows off all the incredible activities and support our learning and participation department has to offer. Take a look here.

You’ll also see that there is a change in start times from 8pm to 7.30pm for some performances, generally at the start of the week. This is a result of a survey with you on social media and here at the theatre. Also we wanted to make it easier for schools and families to attend.

Some audience members have asked me, ‘What has happened to cut to the chase…?’ The name has gone but quite naturally there will be the formation of a new ensemble of versatile actors over the coming seasons that will include many cut to the chase… actors.  The casts of upcoming shows already include some of these familiar faces.

0-0-madeindagenham-featuredimageIt’s difficult to have a semi-permanent company of actors when you’re co-producing. The company of Made in Dagenham will up sticks after the last performances here and head to the New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich where they will perform the show for another four weeks, and we’ll have to bring in a whole new team for the next production. But co-producing has wonderful benefits. These partnerships afford us the ability to make large-scale work, to take greater risks in our programming and introduce the building to new models of working. Our companies get to perform their shows for longer and whole new audiences get to see our work.

Also I felt that we didn’t need to name our company of actors any more. The Queen’s Theatre and its long history and its entire staff are what I want to celebrate. I want there to be no distinction between our staff that work front of house, in administration, backstage or onstage. The naming of a company of actors separates that group from the rest of our wonderful team, many of whom have been here for a long time. Our work is going to be seen by organisations all over the UK and soon in Europe, and I wanted the name of the theatre to be blazoned over the fliers, posters and programmes.

Three shows in my first season will have actor-musicianship at their very hearts but I will not label them as such. They will be great stories that happen to be told in a gorgeous way. And other great stories will be told in equally gorgeous ways.

My ambition is to fill as many people’s lives with wonderful life-affirming stories and for everybody to know about how brilliant the Queen’s Theatre is.
